Flu Season

Each day, about 55 million students and 7 million staff attend the more than 130,000 public and private schools in the United States. Keeping illnesses from spreading is a hard fought battle.  Being one of those Staff and working in Special Education, we fight even harder!           Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes.           During this time, take the following actions to prevent the spread of the flu: Sanitize your hands Cover your  nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing Limit your contact with others- Stay home from school and work Frequently disinfect areas that may be contaminated         We Clorox wipe everything and keep a spray bottle of Bleac

Tapping our Maple Trees

Tapping our Maple Trees  This is our 2nd year for tapping our handful of Maple trees. We only have silver maples- while this gives us a nice sweet syrup when all said and done, it is a little different then Sugar Maples.  Silver maples are not ideal for syrup-making for a couple of reasons. The first reason is the low sugar content of the sap. Silver maples have thin, watery sap with relatively low sugar compared with some other maples. In addition, silver maples tend to leaf out earlier than other maples. Once leaf buds start developing, the flavor of the sap becomes unpleasant. However, gotta use what's on our land.  The tapping season varies from region to region but generally starts in early March and lasts until mid-April. When the sap starts and stops running depends greatly on day and nighttime temperature fluctuations. Watch the weather forecast – sap starts flowing when the temperatures are below freezing at night but climb to the 40°F and above range during the

Welcome to the Crazy Lucky Farm. Starting this Blog on a whim! As a busy mother of 2 active kids and one full grown son, why not just add something else to my plate! The hopes of my Blog is just to document our crazy life style, finding a balance for wanting to be homesteaders and being less tied to the real world- and while still having our fingers in this century.  My story is a simple one. All started with a book tossed in the "Free" box at our library. This came to me at a time when I was working 60+ hours a week, all hours of the day. Was not in a healthy state of mind or body. Five Acres and Independence https://amzn.to/2XThGR5 This book was first published in 1935 and was last updated in 1940.  Some of the methods are outdated. However- The past is the future.  I have always held the  1930s and 40s with some wonder and awe. The hardships people had to  overcome.   I ate it up! Wanting to know more. I realized a few things. I was not happy.  Plain and sim
