Penny Shopping at Dollar general

One of the best-kept secrets is the Dollar General penny deals. 



What is Dollar General Penny Shopping?

Many folks do not know but there is actually such a thing as Dollar General Penny Shopping! It can take a little bit of work, but if you are down to spend a bit of time studying up and are ready for a scavenger hunt, you may just be rewarded with a haul of items from Dollar General that just cost 1 penny!
IMPORTANT: DO NOT ASK DG EMPLOYEES ABOUT PENNY ITEMS! They WILL NOT help you find them! 
These items are supposed to be removed from the floor.

Why are some items at Dollar General a Penny?

One of the things you should know before starting up is the WHY. Dollar General Penny Items are 1 penny after they have been on clearance. Many people who partake in the hobby of "penny shopping" keep a close eye on the clearance items.
Dollar General Penny Items are items that have clearanced out. This means they have already gone the lowest they are supposed to go (90% off) and are supposed to be removed from the shelves.
When the Dollar General employees do not remove the items from the shelves and you find them, they will ring up just 1 penny
  • TIP: Most items that are removed from shelves after they clearance out are just thrown in the dumpster. If you are a dumpster diver, the Dollar General dumpsters can be a great place to find some good stuff. Just be sure to follow local laws and keep yourself safe it you do choose to do this.

  • TIP: Make sure you research before you go and have an idea of what you are looking for. 

  • TIP: Tuesday mornings are when penny deals often occur so this is when you want to be in the store, if possible. 

What kind of items can I get Dollar General Penny Shopping?

They Vary from week to week --Season to season!

My own experience:

I follow this group on FB Dollar General Penny Shopping New Lists come out weekly and are posted by several people in the "know" They post finds and Bar code numbers so you can shop at your own stores.
 Julie's Freebies Page posts a list weekly Find the list here
Penny Finder app-Allows you to scan Bar codes and see if it will come up a penny. However there are some bugs in the app- 
My own experiences I mainly use the FB page and take screenshots of items and bar codes 
My local store is very prompt on removing items. I have only found 2 items there! 
Ever! So don't get discouraged if you don't find 30+ items every time you go out to a store. Some individuals spend all day driving store to store the day penny lists are posted. 

Now, just because you found a penny deal, doesn’t necessarily mean that the store you found it in will let you buy it. Basically, if it’s a penny item, it’s been removed from the store’s inventory, so depending on how the manager runs their store, you may end up walking away without your penny find. It’s hard to know until you cross that bridge, so fingers crossed!

I have better luck going to another town that  is known to have "messer" store.
This was my find last week-15 bottles of Mr. Clean
To me that was a GREAT day. Just something the employees missed, Lucky me! I can get a jump on my spring cleaning!

Remember, penny hunting takes time and patience.

Iowa Ham Balls

Iowa Ham Balls Sweet, filling and simple to make Makes 16 Balls  3 lbs of Ham Loaf (ground Ham and Pork) Add ground beef 1 c. graham cracker crumbs Add graham cracker crumbs 1 c.  2% milk Add Hy-Vee 2% milk 2  large eggs Add Hy-Vee large eggs 1 (10.75 oz) can tomato soup Add (10.75 oz) can Hy-Vee tomato soup 1 c. packed brown sugar Add packed Hy-Vee brown sugar ½  c. vinegar Add Hy-Vee vinegar 1 tsp.  ground mustard Directions Step 1 Combine meats, cracker crumbs, milk and eggs in large bowl and mix well. Form into balls using ice cream scoop and place in pans sprayed with cooking spray. Step 2 For sauce, stir together soup, brown sugar, vinegar and mustard; pour evenly over top of ham balls. Step 3 Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Do Eggs Need to be Refrigerated? The short answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no.  When eggs are laid, they have a protective coating on them called "bloom" this coats the surface of the egg. This bloom seals the egg and helps to prevent bacteria from entering the very porous shell.  Commercial American Eggs are federally required to be washed and sanitized with warm water at a minimum of 90F, before being sold. This removes the Bloom and allow air to break down the shell, and bacteria can enter.
